Gauteng Orienteering Schools League (GSL)

Introduction to the Gauteng Schools League (GSL)

The GSL has been organised and run by the Rand Athletics Orienteering Club, (RACO), under the long term leadership of Peter Hemer for many years. More recently the 3 other Gauteng based orienteering clubs, AR Club, Roc and Witsoc have become more involved. The GSL is aimed at learners from Grade 7 to Grade 12.
The school season runs annually in February and March. Children are encouraged to join orienteering at a club level, which runs throughout the year on Sunday mornings. To do so puts them in line to not only improve their orienteering skills, but to become eligible for selection in the National SA Squad and ultimately to be chosen to represent SA at the Junior World Orienteering Champs.

FOURWAYS HIGH WIN AGAIN!

This year's School's League has been won - for the umpteenth time - by the seemingly unbeatable, Fourways High. The Team Captains stepped up to accept the Trophy at the Final event held at the Walter Sisulu Botanical Gardens.

Individual winners were: Cian Oldknow (Junior Girls), Timothy Chambers (Junior Boys), Nicoletta Andrea (Senior Girls) and Bradley Lund (Senior Boys).

The final, staged in the picturesque gardens, with it's intricate maze of paths and features, had runners scattering in all directions. Well done once again to Peter Hemer, Richard Lund and the whole gaggle of ladies that organised the entire series in meticulous fashion.

Bushtrials hosts first ever Schools league O camp

Report and pictures by Tania Wimberley

On 18 March twenty eight high school kids descended on long time O friends Billy &;; Liz at Bushtrials in the Magaliesberg. Kids were selected to attend this SAOF sponsored weekend camp based on their performance in the 2011 Gauteng schools league. The camp was well organised and run by Garry Morison who received support from 7 assistant coaches, 5 from the RACO family.

The weekend was broken into 9 teaching sessions and covered areas such as grid activities, an attackpoint course, detailed map interpretation and the use of internet technology. In typical fashion the kids had to contend with rain in their compass and pacing exercise but this didn’t seem to dampen their sprits for the star relay that followed.

The camp was a great success in terms of its three fold purpose being:

(i) to give these kids exposure to the greater world of O;

(ii)let them become aware that there are numerous techniques that once mastered will lead to better orienteering : and

(iii)to have fun doing orienteering.

In addition the camp also gave some of our experienced orienteer’s exposure to coaching. They experienced the thrill of seeing the impact of their coaching as the 4 kids assigned to them progressed over the weekend. They probably even learnt something about their own orienteering skills.
It was a thoroughly enjoyable and rewarding weekend for all concerned .
